The name Smutty comes from the fact that the framework is heavily based on the wonderful Smarty templating engine for PHP. It's just meant to mean that Smutty started off as a rather dirty hack, while paying homage to it's inspiration. I also thought it was kinda catchy, ;P
Smutty uses a number of other great projects.
